What is Medical ACT?

Medical ACT (Additional Costs of Teaching) has been in existence since 1977 and is funding provided by NHS Education for Scotland (NES) and the Scottish Government (SG) to support the education of medical students in NHS Scotland.

Medical ACT funding has a role in supporting the Scottish Government policy context. Initiatives implemented in recent years have contributed to delivery of commitments to expand student placements, widen access to medical programmes and encourage more students to train in remote and rural locations.  These include the introduction of places offered within existing medical programmes namely the COMET (Community Orientated Medical Experience Track) places, based within the University of Glasgow and GPEP (GP Enhanced Programme), based within the University of Aberdeen. In addition, 2 graduate entry programmes, Edinburgh HCP-Med and ScotGEM programmes have a strong primary care emphasis.
